The first film produced by El Deseo, the production company co-founded by Pedro Almodóvar and his brother Agustín and filmed the same year as Matador, La ley del deseo (Law of Desire) is its reverse double. The absolute encounter of two beings leaves room for the impossibility for these two beings to attune their desires at the same time. Each character is ready to anything to be loved: Pablo writes to his lover the letter he would himself like to receive from him and his sister has changed sex to satisfy the desire of her former lover. This is maybe Almodóvar's darkest film. The act of creation is shown as having a destructive, quasi-tragic element and no mention is ever made of any film that Almodóvar likes.
