Like his character who wants to leave behind romantic fiction to writer darker and more personal novels, Almodóvar decided to abandon his baroque, provocative cinema to move towards a more streamlined and melodramatic cinema. For the main character, this film marks a clear return to introspection, existence, family ties, writing. It is not surprising that the film uses a possessive pronoun insofar as Almodóvar gives us, in this story, his concerns on himself and his work. It opened a new period for Almodóvar which would give birth to some masterpieces. He also worked again with Alberto Iglesias, a regular composer who he has not stopped working with since.
