La Femme d'à côté
François Truffaut

Bernard and Mathilde knew each other in the past, loved each other passionately, and violently split up. Seven years later, destiny reunites them when Mathilde, recently married to Philippe, moves into the house next door to Bernard, his wife Arlette, and their young child. Inevitably, the two couples become friends. They get together down at the tennis club owned by Mrs. Jouve, an old friend and confidante of the former lovers. Between Bernard and Mathilde it becomes "not with you and not without you".

"This is not a film about physical love but a physical film about love." (F. Truffaut). The Woman Next Door came out of François's desire to make a film about obsessive passion. The departure point was two houses next door to each other and two characters who once loved each other and accidentally get back together." (Jean Aurel) "A dazzling film, a mature film by a director who knew exactly what he wanted and how to achieve it. The Woman Next Door was feverishly written over a period of just a few weeks." (Carole Le Berre) He spells out their passion "in a series of outbursts, fervent embraces, insane crying, fainting fits, dejection, violent embraces, a police van siren. The space is clearly divided: on one side, there's a hotel, sex, suicidal hysteria, and on the other, a family home, relaxed discussions, middle class serenity." (François Bégaudeau)
