An actor before being a director, Roman Polanski (1933) appeared in Andrzej Wajda's Generation in 1954. A graduate of the Lodz Film School, he worked as assistant-director on Andrzej Munk's film Bad Luck. His first feature-length film, Knife in the Water, was nominated for the Oscars in 1964, and got him noticed by the producer Gene Gutowski who would invite him to London and help him produce Repulsion (1965). "The story of a conflict between a husband and wife, and another act in the eternal play of intergenerational conflict, Knife in the Water is at once a cruel analysis of the adopting of bourgeois values by a privileged couple under a socialist regime, and a depiction of young people's confusion, divided between the desire to acquire these privileges and their disgust with the conformism of the previous generations" (M. Perez).
