Johanna, a fragile, young blonde woman, is the victim of a bus crash. Declared clinically dead, she is gradually brought back to life by the doctors and discovers a vocation. As she wanders through the pallid hospital corridors, she soon angers the medical staff, appearing at one time like an angel, and another like a devil, but always symbolising a miracle of nature.

Johanna is a filmed and musical interpretation of the passion of Joan of Arc. All the characters express themselves only in song and the two lead actors are dubbed by singers. Supported by Béla Tarr, who produced the film, Mundruczó tried his hand at some flamboyant techniques (notably the captivating opening sequence shot). Emminently transgressive, Mundruczó reverses expectations and makes the virgin a Holy Whore who enlightens the patients with the gift of her body. Despite being selected for Cannes, the film was not distributed in French cinemas. An opportunity in Angers to discover this unjustly unknown film …
