A classic of Hong Kong cinema and a massive worldwide success, this impeccably written cult film, which inspired Scorsese for his Hollywood remake The Departed, has a pace which never slacks, and where every cut and slow-motion sequence has a purpose. Alternating between action scenes and more contemplative passage (the shots of the city are outstanding), this crime film is above all a character-driven film. The two complex and passionate protagonists are perceived in the development and their notions of good and evil. For the actors, the two directors could not have made a better choice with Andy Lau, an actor and singer who is worshiped in Hong Kong, and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, winner of the Best Actor Award in Cannes for In The Mood For Love in 2000.
