As is often suggested in the titles of Pedro Almodóvar's films, his male characters only rarely pride of place. It is however the case in Hable con ella (Talk to Her) which opens with the same red curtain that closed Todo sobre mi madre (All About My Mother). Tinged with a constant feeling of loneliness, this complex story on male friendship is of a rare legibility. Passion flirts with madness and the disturbing character of Benigno takes the story towards a deceiving gentleness which gives the film an unexpected and moving universality. Like the silent film in the film freely inspired by Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man.
