Terry Gilliam had sworn that he would never shoot a film in Hollywood that he hadn't written himself. Finally, Fisher King was produced by Columbia with Richard LaGravenese's first screenplay. "When I came across the screenplay of Fisher King I found an absolutely incomparable freshness, inventiveness and originality. I had never heard of the writer, Richard LaGravenese. Since then he's become a hot property in Hollywood". After the relative failure of The Adventures of Baron von Munchausen, Gilliam went where he was asked to film. "This is my first American film. Over there the working methods are probably more rigorous, everything is anticipated, planned" (Terry Gilliam). Despite the rigour of American methods, Fisher King is a film with original combinations, sprinkled with medieval, mythical and poetic motifs.
