Entre tinieblas (Dark Habits) is Almodóvar's first “well produced” film. He reveals his sentimental side sooner than we think. The shady world of Madrid night-life is no longer a party but death and a dramatic overdose opens the film. It is true that the story is somewhat provocative, as it focuses on nuns, with improbable names such as Sister Lost or Sister Sordid, who take in victims of all kinds of vice. But the arrival of Yolanda crystallises the passions of these women with curious occupation. Grace goes side by side with the obscene and fantasy mingles with deep melancholy. There is something of Buñuel in the portrayal of the theatricalised masochism of a religion incapable of accepting what I claims to defend the most: love.
