Emir Kusturica got the idea to make a documentary after reading an article on a Romani child trafficking ring. But he soon decided to go further with an ambitious feature which would follow the trajectory of a young man who wanted take care of his sister and give his grandmother a roof over her head. With a solid budget, and the support of Columbia, he started a shoot which would spread out over 9 months and cover almost all of the Yugoslavian republics. Screened in Cannes in 1989, this heartrending melodrama met with great success, and Kusturica's use of a singular poetic realism won him the Best Directors prize.
