In Los Angeles, French woman Émilie, who is separated from the women she loves, is looking for a home for herself and her 8-year-old son. She finds one, and puts in the furniture she picked up off the street. Her distress is expressed more by the others she observes than by herself, living silently in an expanding exile. Some flashes of her past passion concern her and she places all her affection in her son.

Although Mur Murs presents a Los Angeles which expresses itself in its creation, Agnès Varda feels that another city exists, made up of introverts. She decides to film the outsiders, the people in the shadows, with the help of her precious colleague Nurith Aviv. These faces express the inner loneliness of Émilie, played by Varda's editor, Sabine Mamou. Pain makes Émilie increasingly withdrawn. Documenteur, is an extremely personal film and is also the first real role for Mathieu Demy, aged 9 at the time. 30 years later, in Americano, the child, now a filmmaker, takes the role back on and retraces his past.
