"During the auditions in Munich, I was astounded by how much I resembled Hitler – at least physically. All of a sudden, I really had the ambition that all actors have: to get the role" (Bruno Ganz). Ganz has always refused to play Nazis, except in German films. This was the case with Der Untergang (Downfall) where he plays Adolph Hitler. "What interested me particularly about Hitler was his rise to power, the relationship he had with the people and, even more particularly, the relationship the people had with him. [...] Above and beyond political considerations, the film essentially talks about the Nazis' fascination with despair, their macabre attraction for destruction and the Nazi aesthetic" (Bruno Ganz).
