" In Confidentially Yours, the detective-story suspense is only a pretext. For Truffaut, the essential element is elsewhere, in the pleasure of telling a story. What is essential is the difficult relationship between Barbara and her boss, the picturesque gallery of secondary characters, the love the actors have – for one actress, the cinematic references. About Bonjour Tristesse, young critic François Truffaut wrote in 1955 "Cinema is a woman's art, or rather that of the actress. The work of a director consists of making pretty women do pretty things." In short, this was a profession of faith, perfectly illustrated in this fanciful drama, an avowed homage to the American detective films" (after G. Lefort).
