In the sixties, Yilmaz Güney was one of the most popular actors in Turkey. Nicknamed "the ugly king", he played in some hundred commercial films. He became interested in directing and shot a few films including At Avrat Silah (Horse, Woman and Gun) in 1966. Bride of the Earth is considered Yilmaz Güney's first really personal film: it ‘s a love story based on an Anatolian legend in which he plays the main character. If he turns his back on the film genres (melodramas, dramas, musicals...) that made him famous at Yesilcam, Istanbul's Hollywood, he offers us an admirable film that experiments with a curious mixture of the western and sociological satire.
