After having said that he wanted to end his career as a director, Emir Kusturica returned with Cma macka, beli macor (Black Cat, White Cat), a film where the music composed by Kusturica's group the No Smoking Orchestra has a major role. Emir Kusturica said that "what we wanted in the end was a sort of blend of traditional music and a Cuban ‘sound', a world music that is impossible to identify, something free in a way". On shooting with the gypsy community he said that "each line of dialogue was changed to adapt to their way of speaking. In any case, words have never been an essential element for me. When I go on set, and I decide on the camera movements, I encourage the actors to express themselves so that the dialogue last for the right length of time to accompany the visual elements. With the gypsies that is not difficult as they can talk about anything".
