Confronting the cynical conformism of ambition was a theme already dear to Skolimowski since the script for Knife in the Water. One year after Walk-Over, Skolimowski filmed in Barrier a work surprising in its unusual visual language, symbolical and precise, possessing the intensity of modern graphic arts. The symbols are placed in a realistic context, in every day situations, but as the plot thickens, they take on a new, greater meaning. "I have a very personal way of filming. I have no script when I begin. The film is actually written while it's being filmed. In Barrier, the story is about a choice made by the main character, without it being clear what the choice is about. So the spectator must decide himself if the character is living up to his choice or not" (J. Skolimowski).
