"In a film such as Stolen Kisses, the characters take priority over the situations, the sets, and the theme. They are more important than the film's construction, more important than anything else, and thus the necessity of casting just the right actors. (...) The film's linchpin, its raison d'être, is obviously Jean-Pierre Léaud. I love Jean-Pierre because he's out of sync, he's romantic, like a young man from the 19th century. (...) I'm not interested in filming modern times. This film differs from Masculine, Feminine in the same way the jerk differs from a waltz. I'm nostalgic. I'm fascinated with the past. (...) I don't have a sense for what's modern. I live through my sensations, what I have experienced. That's partly why my films are full of youthful memories. (...) So I decided to cheat a bit, to film the past but in the present day Paris." (F. Truffaut)
