As in La ley del deseo (Law of Desire) Antonio Banderas plays a character who wants to force love. But unlike the previous film, ¡Atame! (Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down) is luminous, positive and joyous. The genial presence of Victoria Abril, a newcomer to Almodóvar's cinema, is not with cause. The two marginals at the heart of the story are trying to break with their pasts and each is following a path towards a certain conformism to which they do not have access. Love is born because each of the characters has a fault, a lack of affection, an impossibility to be perceived as what they really are. For Almodóvar it is “the most optimistic of sadomasochistic films”.
