After a long trip, Marc returns to Berlin, to his wife Anna and his son Bob. But he very soon realises that his wife has changed. She has frequent violent episodes, and leaves the family home. Annie, a friend of the couple, tells Marc that Anna has a lover called Heinrich. When she disappears, Marc hires a detective who soon discovers that Anna has taken refuge in a strange house which seems to be hiding something else…
Andrzej Zulawski
“In interviews Andrzej Zulawski often quoted Ingmar Bergman for the construction of his scenarios saying that the best scripts should be written like a stage play, with dialogue alone. He felt that filming a story boils down to filming what should go beyond the viewer. On the theme of the double, in Possession he gives us a story which is constantly evolving, with variable geometry, with transformations before our very eyes. Heavens, how rich it is! Taking the option of a political reading, the choice of setting the action in Germany becomes an essential key to understanding the film. The couple formed by Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani lice in a flat which gives onto the Berlin wall, and the city has become apocalyptic and unnerving”. (Romain Le Vern; Chaos Reigns)
