From his earliest childhood, Jonas has only wanted one thing: to live in the sea. But will he achieve his dream in time?
“A marvel for the eyes and soft on the ears, Zeezucht (Jonas and the Sea) is an incredible gem in animated film. This short film, like an underwater ballet, literally plunges us into the dreamlife od Jonas, a solitary character who is obsessed with the sea. Since his childhood, this anti-hero has longed for a calm, restful life surrounded by fish. To achieve this impossible dream, all his life Jonas has imagined strange inventions created with all sorts of things he has found on the beach. But with each of his attempts, his utopic desire transforms into a pure illusion.
With the delicateness and aesthetics unique to her universe, Marlies van der Wel reconnects once again with poetry giving us a magnificent ode to life. And like in all her films, the Dutch illustrator accompanies her film with a deep moral: the importance of never giving up on your dreams.
Jonas and the Sea sheds light on various themes about life, such as greed, aspirations and isolation. We understand as the minutes pass that Jonas has been condemned to solitude because of his desire, unfortunately misunderstood by others. The solitude of this character is represented by a dark, turbulent image, symbolically reminiscent of a tempestuous
