Cashiered from the army, Thomas returns to Jerichow, his native village in north-eastern Germany. Ali, a Turkish-German businessman and owner of a fast-food chain, hires him as a chauffeur. This is how Thomas meets Laura, his employer's attractive young wife…
“Without money, love is impossible” says Laura, the character played by Nina Hoss in Jerichow. Distantly inspired by The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain, Jerichow is the story of a love triangle infiltrated by money. “American noir novels and films are based on the eruption of sexual urges in an order founded on prosperity. Jerichow works in reverse to this principle. The only fantasy which moves Laura and Thomas is one of instant wealth. At least Ali has the merit of having waited before achieving it. This radical reflection of the narrative leads it to a very different conclusion to that of the novel.” (Thomas Sotinel; Le Monde)
