Spain, 1944. Carmen, recently remarried, moves, with her daughter Ofélia, in with her new husband, the very authoritarian Vidal, a Captain in the Francoist army. Ofélia finds it difficult to adjust to her new life, until she finds a mysterious labyrinth guarded by a strange creature, Pan, who reveals to her that she is no other than the lost princess of an enchanted kingdom…
El laberinto del fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) matured for almost 20 years in Guillermo Del Toro's mind. He had a very different film in mind originally, even if there was still the mix of a troubled period in history and fantasy. A fairy-tale for adults, the film never draws a clear line between pure fantasy and a criticism of fascism which finds its echo in a handful of scenes whose violence is all the more unbearable since it is realistic. Ofélia goes deeper into another time thanks to the power of belief in the imaginary.
