Makoto is a tomboyish schoolgirl who is not very interested in school. Until the day she receives a particular gift: time travel. Improving her scores, helping burgeoning idylls along, constantly eating her favourite food, anyhting is possible…
Few people noted at its release that The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was not the adaptation of a successful Japanese novel from the 1960s, but its sequel. The original story tells the similar adventures lived by her Aunt Makoto when she was young, which was obvious for audiences in Japan, but not necessarily for those elsewhere. This magnificent animated film revealed the lead of the new guard of Japanese animation. Rejected by the Studio Ghibli, Mamoru Hosoda cut his teeth at Toei Animation on episodes of Digimon and One Piece. He then joined Madhouse to make this film and continued directing with works as diverse as they are brilliant: such as Summer Wars (2009), Wolf Children (2012) or the recent Mirai in the Future (2018) in which he again plays around with time.
