The Art of Time

Ingmar Bergman
1957 - Sweden - 1h31

Screenings : sunday 27 - 5:15 pm - Grand Théâtre friday 1 - 4:30 pm - Multiplexe - 2
Isak Borg is invited to Lund to receive an honorific distinction crowning his career as a doctor. Changing his plans following an enigmatic dream, he decides to go there by car, and his daughter-in-law Marianne joins him. The journey is an opportunity for him to return, both geographically and emotionally, to moments which have marked his life, and to see the protagonists again…
A genuine internal journey, Smultronstället (Wild Strawberries) alternates between the central theme of anxiety about death (crowning a life devoid of meaning) and more nostalgic variations around the family, time passing the lost paradise of childhood. The fluidity of the staging takes us from the present to memories thanks to the use of the first person in the voice-over commentaries. The film is also a twofold tribute to Victor Sjöström. Bergman gave him the lead role and paid tribute to his talents as a silent film director (notably of Körkarlen (The Phantom Carriage)) through the nightmare (or subconscious) scenes which will forever haunt some spectators.
