Shooting the Mafia

Kim Longinotto
2019 - Ireland - 1h34

Sicilian Letizia Battaglia began her fight against the mafia the day she dared to point her camera at a brutally murdered victim. By exposing the barbaric reign of Cosa Nostra, she became an unwavering witness to their crimes and led a life continuously marked by challenge and passion.
For thirty years, British director Kim Longinotto has been filming women in rebellion against oppressive systems in Iran, Kenya and India. Together with Letizia Battaglia, the first Italian photojournalist to have documented murders perpetrated by the mafia in Sicily, she has painted a double portrait. The portrait of a woman breaking traditional social conventions to lead a loving and free life and the portrait of a region punctuated by a murderous agenda until, one by one, heads roll. From images of Italian cinema classics to reports from the Rai, from Battaglia's black and white photographs to her interventions as a politician, Shooting the Mafia highlights the intimate porosity that Sicilians have maintained with the mafia.
