Salvatore Giuliano

Francesco Rosi
1962 - Italy - 2h03

1950. Salvatore Giuliano is found dead... 1945. Giuliano is twenty years old and after killing a carabiniere, he goes underground, becomes a popular hero and carries the banner of the poor, before descending into banditry...
Francesco Rosi, who worked with Luchino Visconti on the filming of La terra trema (The Earth Trembles), created “cine-investigation” with Salvatore Giuliano, which would later enjoy significant development in Italy. Rosi defines his film as follows: “A speech over the body of Julius Caesar” In other words, the bandit Giuliano, as such, is less important to him than a portrait of Sicily. By adopting such an approach, Rosi goes into “a vast operation to demystify the bandit of honour, he encircles its radical inauthenticity (...).” (Freddy Buache; Italian Cinema 1945-1990)
