The Angers Workshops, initiated by Jeanne Moreau, are directed toward young European filmmakers with one or two short films to their credit and a first feature film in the works.

This training is designed to give them support as they take that crucial step into the world of feature films.

The Workshops will offer them:

Screenings and analyses of film classics from the past and present, as well as original working documents.

Training with established filmmakers and technicians who will bring to the classroom their professional experience and methods.

Development of their personal projects under the guidance of the attending instructors, with emphasis on specific questions concerning directing, working with actors, editing, sound...

Today’s vast technological advancements greatly impact the creative work of young filmmakers. Therefore a large portion of the Workshops curriculum will focus on digital technology, which - from filming to postproduction - influences the making and distribution of image and sound.

The 1st edition of the Workshops, in July 2005, with Jeanne Moreau as artistic director, brought together as instructors a group of European film professionals:
Krzysztof Zanussi, director (The Constant Factor, The Structure of Crystal),
Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, directors (The Promise, Rosetta, The Child),
Gérard De Battista, cinematographer (Venus Beauty Institute, Level Five, Little Lili),
François Gédigier, editor (The Sentinel, Queen Margot, Dancer in the Dark),
Christian Guillon, visual effects specialist (Podium, Trouble Every Day),
Alain Marcoen, cinematographer for the Dardenne brothers,
Franck Montagné, digital post-production specialist,
Alain Rocca, producer(The Scent of Green Papaya, Hate, Marock),
Piotr Szczepansky, chief cameraman for Krzysztof Zanussi,
Dan Weil, production designer (Nikita, The 5th Element, Syriana).

  PROGRAMME

The Workshops focus on four activities:

Screenings: Each day there is a screening of a film classic or original working document chosen by the attending instructor with the participating filmmakers’ expressed interests in mind. These screenings take place at Les 400 Coups Cinema

Masterclass: These hour and a half long classes are structured around the day’s screening with each instructor talking about his or her professional experience with emphasis on their creative process.
The attending instructors may call upon film colleagues: cameramen, editors, composers, set designers and/or actors.
Special attention is paid to the choices made in directing, directing actors, editing, and sound/music, as well as the results obtained.

Lab works: These labs are led by the Master Class instructors with a hands-on approach to the fundamental aspects of filmmaking in response to the participants' specific questions concerning their own projects.
The lab work is carried out on a one-on-one basis or in small groups, taking advantage of the collective nature of the Workshops to facilitate exchange.

Personal work: The participants are invited to make a short video clip on a designated subject, having at their disposal video and AVID editing equipment. There will be a screening of these short films at the end of the Workshops.
