In the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Danish merchant ship MV Rozen is captured by Somali pirates who hold the crew hostage and claim a ransom of $15 million. Among the 7 men remaining on board, Mikkel, the cook, who is married and the father of a young daughter, finds himself at the heart of the negotiation between Peter, the CEO of the shipping company and the pirates.
Thomas Vintenberg screenwriter, Tobias Lindholm made his second film with Kapringen (A Hijacking). Made in part with non-professional actors, A Hijacking was shot off the Kenyan coast during 3 weeks, on a ship which actually already had been attacked by pirates. To avoid any possible risks in this dangerous region, the film crew were protected by armed guards. A tense climate which reinforced the oppressive aspect of the film which is nevertheless offset by the often daring choice of staging (several crisis situations take place off screen, the suspense is sometimes based on long-distance telephone calls).
