New York, 1979. At nearly 60 years of age, Michael, patriarch of the Corleone clan, wants to distance himself from the criminal underworld. He has reinvested his dishonestly acquired fortune in legal activities. But Michael is desperate to find a successor. His only son has announced his intention to become an opera singer. Meanwhile Mary, his daughter, and Vincent, his nephew, Sonny's son, are living an idyll that is not welcome in the family...
For a long time Francis Ford Coppola refused to make a third part to his saga. Fifteen years after the second opus, however, he decided to return behind the camera to film the intimate epilogue of his story. Coppola de a spectacular turnaround towards lost traditions and exposed the influence of opera on his cinema. The final scene of the film, which takes place in Palermo, is a notable example of this.
