Nuovo cinema Paradiso

Giuseppe Tornatore
1988 - Italy / France - 1h55

In Rome, at the end of the 1980s, filmmaker Salvatore learns of the death of his old friend Alfredo, a projectionist. With this news, his whole childhood comes back to him: his native village, in Sicily, when he was called Totò and shared his free time between the church (where he was an altar boy) and the parish cinema, where Alfredo the projectionist reigned supreme, and who, through the films he showed, taught him about life.
“Between Alfredo and Totò (who is about ten years old at the beginning of the film), we are told a story of learning about life and cinema, about life through cinema. Brought up by a widowed single mother, young Totò found a father figure in Alfredo to guide him on the roads of life. (...) Nuovo Cinéma Paradiso (Cinema Paradiso) focuses on cinema as a place of socialisation, as a place (full!) of life, of sharing, creating links and allowing people to form groups, to gather, to exchange ideas and feelings, to unite and to commune in emotion.”" (Philippe Leclercq; teacher)
