August 1945. Don Vito Corleone, godfather of one of the American mafia families, marries his daughter to a bookmaker. The godfather of a rival family wants to enter into an association with Corleone. Don Corleone refuses, leading to a ruthless war between the two families...
Adapted from a novel by Mario Puzo, The Godfather is an absolute classic of American cinema with complex beginnings. A series of filmmakers was approached to direct this project, including Costa-Gavras. The head of Paramount, Robert Evans, who died last October, had wanted an Italian-American and Coppola put forward the idea of making a metaphor of American capitalism, coupled with Italian and more specifically Sicilian culture. Evans was won over and offered him the job. The film went on to win three Oscars, including the Best Actor for Marlon Brando.
