Sedotta e abbandonata

Pietro Germi
1964 - Italy / France - 1h58

During a siesta in a Sicilian village, Peppino abuses his fiancée's sister, Agnese, who falls pregnant. Her father broke off Peppino's engagement to Mathilde and wanted Agnese to marry Peppino. Peppino refuses, claiming that she is now a “fallen woman”...
Three years after the international success of Divorzio all'italiana (Divorce Italian Style), Pietro Germi made a new comedy of manners in which he continued his description of “archaic” behaviours. In this film, Germi attacked the Sicilian notion of “rehabilitating marriage” which washes away an abuser's offence if he marries his victim... On the characters in the film, Germi said that “it is the myth of honour that alienates them from themselves and from real values, in this case, from the human value of the young female victim.”
