Il gattopardo
Luchino Visconti
1963 - Italy / France - 3h06
In 1860, while Sicily is on the throes of the upheavals caused by Garibaldi and his red shirts, Prince Salina takes his whole family to his residence in Donnafugata. Foreseeing the decline of the aristocracy, he accepts a mismatched marriage allowing his nephew Tancredi to wed the daughter of the city's mayor, who represents the new up and coming class.
“After the already sparkling Senso, in the early 1960s Visconti began to adapt Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's sole novel, published posthumously and which became one of the bestsellers of the post-war period. Visconti chose to focus on the years 1860-62 from the original text, the period when, in the middle of the Risorgimiento, Garibaldi's troops took possession of Sicily, leading Italy towards the adoption of a single constitution. At the crossroads of realities that will soon become mutually exclusive, from the reign of a declining aristocracy to the emergence of the bourgeoisie, Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) develops its story over a two-year period, the fleeting time of a hesitant waltz where everything is already up for grabs.” (Ariane Prunet; Critikat)
