Sicilia!

Mafioso

Alberto Lattuada
1962 - Italy - 1h45

Antonio Badalamenti is a foreman in a factory in Milan. Determined to introduce his wife and daughters to his family, he sets off for Sicily to spend the holidays there. Once he arrives, Antonio is contacted by Don Vincenzo, to whom he owes his comfortable situation. Don Vincenzo wants him to return the favour...
For his incursion into Sicily, Alberto Lattuada succeeded in combining Francesco Rosi's cold and lucid point of view with Pietro Germi's cynical laugh. The scenario is an inevitable downwards spiral where the irony of Marco Ferreri (who was initially slated to direct the film) and the grotesque sense of the duo of Age and Scarpelli work wonders. While Mafioso began as a comedy between two civilizations (the industrial North against the South resisting to the economic boom), he had a latent concern that the last part in the form of a living nightmare should come true. Alberto Sordi is excellent as an exalted bon vivant returning to his roots before realising that he is only an anonymous pawn for the mafia and for the factory that employs him.
