L'avventura

Michelangelo Antonioni
1960 - Italy / France - 2h24

Anna and Sandro, a young bourgeois couple, take a cruise in the Mediterranean. During a stopover on a volcanic island, Anna disappears. Sandro and Claudia, a friend, try to find her. Gradually, however, they become less and less obsessed by her disappearance. Something a bit like love is seeming to emerge between them…
Shot under extremely difficult conditions on the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily (no electricity, no hot water or means of communication with the outside world), L'avventura (The Adventure) remains Michelangelo Antonioni's most exciting shooting experience. Despite the booing and whistling it received at its screening in Cannes, the film is intriguing for those who understand that Antonioni leaves his “police” plot to go elsewhere. The void created by the disappearance is replaced by a more existential void. For Antonioni, “the characters in the film live an emotional adventure, involving the death and the birth of love; a psychological and moral adventure that makes them act against established conventions and the criteria of a now outdated world.”
