La terra trema
Luchino Visconti
1952 - Italy - 2h38
In Aci Trezza, a coastal village in Sicily, fishermen are struggling to feed their families. Antonio Valastro persuades his family to fight against the wholesalers speculating on fish prices.
Between ethnographic documentary and fiction, the ambition of La terra trema (The Earth Trembles) is to blend Sicilian reality (Visconti is fascinated by its beauty as well as its poverty) with a sweeping and lyrical novel. For Visconti, “(...) we need to go back to the origins, to pure truth, without cheating. Without a pre-established division, without real actors, relying on reality and truth (...) I remember that my professional conscience told me: you must not make any concessions.” (Interview with Giuseppe Ferrara; Seghers)
