Hanna Kaufman, an American Jew living France, decides to leave her husband for a career in Israel. In Jerusalem she defends Selim Bakri, an illegal immigrant threatened with deportation…
Co-written with Franco Solinas (Salvatore Giuliano, La battaglia di Algeri (The Battle of Algiers), etc), writing his second screenplay, Hanna K. chooses to confront the Israeli-Palestine conflict from the angle of the dispossession of Palestinian land. Costa-Gavras treats this highly sensitive subject with great sobriety in the language and the desire to remove taboos. The narrative takes the form of a personal and irreversible awakening to injustice and is rooted in an Arab house which has become a museum. The discovery of the actual place led Costa-Gavras to say that it was this that made the story real.
