FIKRET (17) illegally sells roses in the traffic jam on the Bosphorus bridge that links Asia and Europe. At the same time, he is striving for a regular job in the old downtown of Istanbul. UMUT (28) drives a shared taxi passing the Bosphorus bridge every day. He is searching for a better apartment to rent in order to satisfy his wife, whose desires are beyond his earnings. The traffic policeman Murat (24), who is stationed at the Bosphorus bridge, feels alone amidst the solid lines of cars. Each night at home, he logs on to the internet seeking for dating chances.
Asli Özge was born in Istanbul in 1975. She graduated from the Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts Film & TV in 1999, and immediately afterwards she made the short film Capital C.. Her TV feature followed in 2003, Little Bit of April. Her next project, a documentary entitled Hesperos’ Apprentices, competed in the Antalya Film Festival in 2005. In 2009, Özge completed her first theatrical feature Men on the Bridge. Özge is currently working on her follow-up feature Asphyxia.
“In Men on the Bridge I wanted to focus how the fear of an uncertain future shapes the daily lives of young people in today’s Istanbul. At first glance, the rhythm of daily life in Istanbul appears to be frenetic and frantic; in fact, the daily lives and the realisation of the aspirations of many of its inhabitants grind along at a pace comparable to that of gridlock on the Bosphorus Bridge. In the beginning, I intended to make a documentary film, but after getting to know three engaging characters, who are working around the bridge, I decided to write a script inspired by their own stories and offered them to act themselves in the film.”
