A small provincial town in Romania is preparing for Christmas. A local television presenter invites viewers to compare their stories of the Revolution with two guests, an alcoholic professor and a pensioner…
After a series of acclaimed short films, Corneliu Porumboiu started his first feature, of which he wrote the script in June 2005 for a shoot in December of the same year, without a big budget. Determined to maintain his independence, he invested part of his own money in the film and worked with people he knew well. The title refers to the time when the Ceausescus left their palace by helicopter when the army sided with the protesters. But Porumboiu had the flair to revisit History using humour and comparing points of view. He questioned the individual relationship that everyone had with the Revolution and remained lucid about the depressed social reality 16 years after the events. Ironic without being sarcastic, the film won the Caméra d'or at the Cannes Film Festival.
