France lives under the dictatorship of Rire Salvateur. Humour tests are carried out daily, and those who fail to comply are severely punished. Anna and Louis, two melancholy lovers, have escaped from a reform school through Laughter. Hunted by the police and the jokes, they try to reach a boat bound for South America.
